Awareness for September - written by Peter Bowen-Walker Clinical Negligence Solicitor
Now that August has come to an end and hopefully the worst of the heat is behind us, maybe you feel you have a little more energy to get involved in some worthy charitable activity. Here are a few events which take place in September – even if you don’t want to get involved directly, there may be some useful information available from these organisations and charities.
- September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and is symbolised by a gold ribbon, worn to commemorate the event.
About 1,645 children (up to the age of 15) in the UK are diagnosed with cancer each year with leukaemia, brain tumours and lymphomas as the most common diagnoses in this age group. Around half of all cases are found in the 0-4 year age group.
About 2,110 teenagers and young adults (15-24 years old) are diagnosed with cancer every year with carcinomas (breast, cervix and bowel), melanomas (skin) and lymphomas as the most common diagnoses in this age group.

- September is also Blood Cancer Awareness Month.
Did you know that in the UK, every 20 minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer or disorder? And that for most people a blood stem cell donation from a stranger with similar DNA is their best – or only – chance of survival?

- Migraine Awareness Week 2022 – 5th September – 10th September
Migraine is a severe and painful long-term health condition. If you have migraine you will have migraine attacks, which can be a whole-body experience.
There are different types of migraine. There is an international classification system for migraine which doctors use to diagnose and treat them.
