The last month of Spring - How will you make May matter? - Written by Peter Bowen-Walker Clinical Negligence
We are quickly moving through May and the last month of meteorological spring. To help you make the most of this season as it heads to a close, here are some good causes you may wish to get involved with:
May is The Stroke Association’s “Make May Purple / Action on Stroke Month”.
May the 2nd to May the 8th is also very sensibly “Sun Awareness Week” as we start to experience the higher UV levels. This campaign is run by the British Association of Dermatologists who aim to raise awareness of skin cancer. More information can be found at https://www.skinhealthinfo.org.uk/sun-awareness/sun-awareness-week/
Overlapping with Sun Awareness Week are “Dying Matters Week”(May 2nd to May 6th) and also “Deaf Awareness Week” (May 3rd to May 8th). The former is run by Hospice UK who aim to encourage people to talk about death, dying and bereavement. Sadly, a set of topics all too familiar to personal injury and clinical negligence lawyers - https://www.hospiceuk.org/our-campaigns/dying-matters/dying-matters-awareness-week
Deaf Awareness Week, run by the UK Council on Deafness is all about promoting the positive aspects of living with deafness, but also promotes the importance of social inclusion around the deaf community. British Sign Language awareness is also highlighted. https://www.healthwatch.co.uk/event/2022-05-04/deaf-awareness-week
Did you know that:
- Lip-reading helps deaf people to understand what others are saying, but even the best lip-readers still miss up to 40% of what has been said.
- The Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists highlighted that the rise in the use of face masks due to the Covid-19 pandemic makes it harder for people with hearing loss to communicate. Face coverings with a transparent panel over the mouth have now been created so that people can still lip-read through masks.
The National Deaf Children’s Society provides a helpful postcard with tips for children and young people when talking to deaf friends and can be downloaded from their website at https://www.ndcs.org.uk/documents-and-resources/talking-to-your-deaf-friends-postcard/
Enjoy the activities and enjoy the lengthening days.
