Wernicke’s Encephalopathy from Thiamine (Vitamin B1) deficiency - written by Maria Farrell Clinical Negligence

Wernicke’s Encephalopathy from Thiamine (Vitamin B1) deficiency - written by Maria Farrell Clinical Negligence

Wernicke’s Encephalopathy is a neurological disorder due to severe thiamine deficiency. Thiamine is a vitamin and this only obtained from the diet.

Our client had undergone a laparoscopic gastric sleeve procedure abroad in order to lose weight.

She was admitted to the Defendant’s hospital because of vomiting and abdominal pain following the laparoscopic sleeve operation and it was noted that she had very poor oral intake post-operatively, being unable to take in solids due to epigastric pain.  She was admitted for intravenous fluids and Imaging, was discharged home but later re-admitted to hospital as an emergency with symptoms which included  vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness and lack of appetite.

As a result of inadequate management by the Defendant our client suffered from Wernicke’s encephalopathy.

Our case, supported by medical evidence, was that had she received timely and accurate assessment and monitoring treatment from the Defendant, with appropriate nutritional support, then the thiamine deficiency from her worsening nutritional state caused by persistent vomiting, would not have occurred. Wernicke’s encephalopathy from thiamine deficiency would have been avoided.

Medical evidence confirmed that our client’s symptoms included that of memory problems, altered concentration span, visual disturbance and problems with her gait.

This case settled for £150,000.00.

Our client has said that she is so happy with the services provided by Clear Law that she is recommending a friend to Clear Law.

The case was handled by Maria Farrell, Senior Solicitor who specialises in Clinical Negligence Claims.
